Samsung apologises for Russian app download error

Samsung has apologized for a software upgrade delivered to UK consumers that began downloading Russian government-mandated applications. The erroneous phrasing was due to a technical issue, and no Russian apps had been loaded, according to the company.

In April, Russia enacted a new rule requiring cellphones to include software developed in the nation. Customers would be anxious, according to one expert, because Samsung has not completely explained what went wrong.

Andrew edmas purchased a used Samsung Galaxy Z Flod2 Phone on Amazon Marketplace three weeks ago and updated it with an approved Samsung update.

Russian restrictions

Following the completion of the installation, he noticed the following text: "As part of the execution of the requirements of the Government of the Russian Federation's declaration number 1867 of November 18, 2020, the download of required application has been added."

Some of these apps can only be installed once the device has been reset to factory defaults." Concerned, he called Samsung, who assured him that he would receive a response within 48 hours.

“Finally, a tech remote-accessed my phone and validated the update, saying he'd never seen anything like it before and directing me to customer solutions.

Andy Edmans Twitter note

Mr. Edmans was ultimately told it was "a notification error" when this was raised to the high office.

Mr. Edmans expressed his disappointment with Samsung's handling of the situation, saying, "We truly regret any difficulty caused by this."

"All I know is that my Samsung fold 2 gadget still says it has a Russian Federation update on it as of this morning," he added. "I have bipolar and anxiety disorders, and my fear over phone security has further exacerbated those problems."

Prof Alan Woodward, a computer security specialist at the University of Surrey, said it was difficult to see how such a letter could have been transmitted by accident due to a technological fault.

"The nice thing about this warning-assuming it is meant for you-is that Samsung is being honest by giving you links to the Russian federation decree that demands such software," he said, adding that it provided insight into how Samsung dealt with Russian legislation.

"However, privacy expert Pat Walshe said he believed the matter had been poorly handled, especially in light of Mr.edmans' worry and anguish, as well as the fact that he couldn't trust the installation."
